I love Windows Vista.

People keep asking me what they can do about slow computers. I have over the years become accustom to a set up that seems to work pretty well. Surprisingly to most people my best computer set ups including the laptop that I am using to post this message are running Vista. One uses Vista Home Premium and the other Vista Business. Both of these machines are equipped with 2 gig of ram which really is not that much by today's standards. On my desktop I have a 512mb video card and on the laptop I have a 128mb card that can use some of the system memory to help it out. They both run Vista in the "areo" mode just fine and both have not crashed ever. Not even so much as a glitch.

Now the Vista OS by itself seems to run just fine, however I do make sure that it stays updated. That is my first trick. Since Vista by itself causes me no headaches I know that for the most part any headaches I have will come from the installation of other software. So my second secret is to be very selective in my software choices. I stay with bigger brands that I can trust.

I like to use McAfee as my virus protection for two reasons. One it comes free with my Comcast subscription which is important. Two it seems to do a good job. One caution is to not use the default McAfee settings. You do not need to scan your computer all of the time. In fact I usually scan my computer once every couple weeks maybe longer. When you are set up to perform scans constantly your computer will slow to a crawl, so make sure that it is not set to go that often.

Spyware is a bigger problem and the software to fix it is also a real issue. I like to use the Windows Defender because it is free and easy to use. Again you need to make sure that the settings are not out of control. I don't scan for spyware every 5 minutes. I find that the best rule is to stay off sites that will probably try and put spyware on your computer. I have been able to go for a long time without ever getting a piece of spyware or virus by not clicking on links or e-mails that are probably not anything I need to look at. When I have come across something that means to do me harm I have found that Windows Defender or McAfee have been able to do the trick and I am able to happily keep computing.

Windows browsers are something however that I feel might need to be changed from the default Internet Explorer. Explorer always seems to give me fits and eventually will do funky things. One of the most promising new browsers to me is Google Chrome. It seems to work well for most things I do and I have not had any problems with crashing or improper page loading yet. (I have been using it for a few weeks at the time of this post). The only time that I find I need to use Explorer is for Netflix movie watching because of the DRM media player that it installs. But I have found that I use my Explorer window of for that now and nothing else.

This is a fun little song at 140 BPM that I worked on during the half time of a football game. It is a great track for beats and fills. Click on the links below to listen, there is a post with the downloadable tracks and you can also subscribe to the Podcast using the link above.

Hope you enjoy it.

Subscribe to the Podcast

This is the first ever Drum Free podcast. After a couple hours of hard work and the help of some excellent software I was able to get my Podcast on iTunes. Zune has not confirmed the addition yet, but I am thinking that it will also be availible on that system as well. As always I hope you enjoy the free drum practice tracks.
